There are different grainmill in the market today including hand operated mill, electric mill, and automatic mill. These grainmill are available in an affordable prices ranging $70 up to $400. People who bake at home prefer electric grainmill to be faster and efficient other than hand mill that can be tiring and tedious to the hand. However, the manual mill can grind coarse grain like combreads and cereals. Brands are also considered in choosing grainmil.

Accordingly, the Country Living mill is a good choice of manual mill with its reasonable price of $395. You may also consider Family mill brand that has been in the market for years.

There are number of brands for electric grainmill to be consider which includes Nutrimill, Wondermill, and K-Tec. The Wondermill also known as Whispermill by its marketing company used to be the best electric grainmill until Nutrimill beat it. But Wondermill brand is still a great choice for an electric mill to shop. It is said that the Nutrimill brand is quiet and has the standard for grinding. It also has a lot of texture setting for baking. It is a bit expensive the same with Wondermill. If you’re not a heavy beaker you can also consider the K-Tec brand that has the balance between quality and affordability.

Furthermore, the Vitalmill brand is said to be the most affordable grainmill in the market. This is use for casual grinding activities at home and not meant for hard core grinding.

Electric Nutrimill

Nutrimill
We live in a log cabin and we have a hand corn grinder setting on our front porch. I remember using one when I was a child. Believe it or not, I am not a hundred years old. We also have an electric grain mill inside the house, which one do you suppose we use today?

About forty years ago I came across a bread recipe that the bread came out almost black. It was the most wonderful tasting bread! The cookbook was loaned to me by a friend and I guess my brain wasn't working right back then because I returned that cookbook without copying the recipe. I am still looking for that recipe. About ten years ago we purchased the electric Nutrimill grain Mill. Each time when we are ready to bake bread we grind our wheat first and then use the flour to bake the bread. Some grain mills are so loud you have to go outside with them to grind the wheat. A fifty pound bag usually lasts us about a year. We store it in a tin can and it keeps just fine. We have enjoyed the healthiest brown bread that you could ever ask for. There are no preservatives added to this bread, nor is any of the good content taken out. It is the whole wheat grain. By grinding the wheat into flour immediately before using it, you save all the natural vitamin and mineral content. That is the luxury of using the electric Nutrimill grain mill.

Technology continues to develop and improve in every field. You will not regret your purchase.

The Country Living Grain Mill

country living mill

If you have ever browsed through an antique shop and seen the hand mixer used by our grandmothers, you wonder how they ever made do with it. Then along came the electric hand mixer, and we thought what a wonderful invention. Next came the mixer on a stand and we thought how wonderful, both hands are free to measure, pour, etc.

That is why the accessories are so great because they are powered by that same powerful motor. With the dough hook and the powerful motor it does a wonderful job in kneading bread, unlike any other mixer on the market

We make a wonderful Cranberry relish every year at holiday time. We had a very difficult time finding a meat grinder that would feed the cranberries through. One of our twelve-year-old grandsons was here the day we tried the cranberries in the hand grinder. That didn't work either. We laughed and cried and fussed and carried on! In exasperation my husband wondered, "What have we reduced ourselves to?" Our grandson thought he had a good taste of Amish life. Finally, we learned that the Bosch mixer had a meat grinder attachment, which we purchased. Now we smile and say, "What a breeze!" and we have not had to look any further. (By the way the hand grinder hasn't been taken off the shelf since.)
The blender also is the most powerful blender we have ever used. We purchased a Vita-Mix blender about 15 years ago, thinking we had the most powerful blender on the market. While it is a good blender, we hardly ever get it out, because we are so happy with the Bosch blender.

We haven't personally purchased the food processor yet. When we are ready to invest in one, we wouldn't consider anything else, because it would have the same powerful motor as all the other attachments have. If you decide to invest in the Bosch Mixer and attachments you will be amazed at what it can do and you will not regret making the purchase.

The Bosch mixer makes wonderful cakes, mashed potatoes, etc., but the most wonderful task of all is kneading our brown bread. We grind our wheat berries in the Nutrimill and then go straight to the country grainmill mixer to mix the bread dough. We love our homemade brown bread and we wish you success as well.

NutriMill to Mill Grains at Home

What started out as a hobby has become our way of life here in the Miller house-hold. For years now, I have been home milling and baking with freshly milled flour. Because of the Country GrainMill , it has been really easy to incorporate fresh, whole grains into my family's diet on a daily basis. The ease of this small home mill is amazing and takes no more time to use than it takes to gather all your baking ingredients. The NutriMill is generous enough in size to mill enough flour for baking several treats; it has a adjustable power and coarseness and it is quick and simple to use.

The variable texture of the mill allows for multiple dry grains and legumes to be milled into flour. I am able to mill from the smallest wheat kernels to kidney beans in the same mill - even at the same time. The bottom container (hopper) where the flour collects has the capacity to store up to 20 cups of freshly milled flour.

The NutriMill is a readily available small kitchen appliance that is no larger on the counter than a crock pot. It can be easily stored and stacked away if the counter space is not always available.

Just place the dry grain (non oily) in the top of the mill, set the preferred speed and turn the coarseness dial to the chosen texture. It's that easy! In a short amount of time the NutriMill has milled all the grain. It takes no longer than gathering the other ingredients needed for the recipe and now we have fresh, warm, whole wheat flour ready for wholesome and nourishing goodies.

By using the NutriMill I have not only added whole grains to our healthier diet, but I have also saved us money. By milling corn for cornbread, beans for adding protein and wheat for bread and countless other dry grains and legumes we have changed our eating habits here at Miller home. Foods made with freshly milled flour are full of all the nutrients and vitamins as it was intended.

Three types of home country grainmill

Stone Mills - These grain mills have the ability to grind fine flours and can be adjusted for a range of flours from fine to cracked grain consistency. Cracked is perfect for part of the brewing beer process.  The more oily grains and beans should not be used as they will cause the stones to glaze. The stones will need cleaning to remove fine particles that lodge within the stones. Stones wear out over time and need replacing, depending on how often you use your home grain mill.
SteelCone Burr Mills - These home grain mills use a stainless steel milling head. They too can mill grains into a range of from fine to cracked grain consistency, however they may not be able to mill as fine as a stone mill is capable. You can mill a wider variety of grains and beans than a stone mill without fear of messing up the milling heads, they are easy to clean. Generally the steel-cone burr mill will produce flour at a slower speed, and as a bonus, operate more quietly than other home grain mills. Also, a slower speed will mean less heat will be created and less loss of nutriments. Steel cone burrs will mill most whole grains and beans, but corn and beans will need to be cracked. Then run through again on a finer setting if you want bean or corn flours. For the most part the fine flour produced is suitable for breads, muffins, pastries, etc, but the flour will not be as fine as you may desire.
Micronizing Grain Mills- These are considered the "newer technology" grain milling machine.  A micronizer is made up of concentric circles of stainless steel "teeth" which spin at a very high speed. They "burst" the grain into flour when the grain comes in contact with the stainless steel milling head. The result is beautiful flours in a fraction of time, the result is also low-temperature milling. These mills will produce the finest flours and will adjust to as coarse as corn meal. Since micronizers run at very high speeds they produce flour more quickly than a steel-cone burr or stone home grain mills, but they generate a lot of noise. These are also the most popular type of grain mill on the market.

When purchasing a home grain mill, take a VERY deep breath and relax.  Mills can be expensive for electric or less for hand cranked grain mills.  Investing in a kitchen appliance like a home grain mill is just that, an investment.  If you do your research right the mill will be with you and tour family for years.  And all of those years will be rewarded with great healthy food preparation and healthy food products.

Country Grain Mill

What started out as a hobby has become our way of life here in the Frogstone house-hold. For years now, I have been home milling and baking with freshly milled flour.

My absolute favorite small appliance in the kitchen is the NutriMill because of the NutriMill, it has been really easy to incorporate fresh, whole grains into my family's diet on a daily basis. The ease of this small home mill is amazing and takes no more time to use than it takes to gather all your baking ingredients. No more money wasted on ordering out pizza and loaves of dead bread that cost $3.00. Foods made with freshly milled flour are full of all the nutrients and vitamins as it was intended. No wonder it tastes so good! The ease of the NutriMill has made this healthier lifestyle possible.
